Häagen-Dazs Peppermint Bark Ice Cream Is Back

Food & Recipes

Do you someone who would love this flavor?

While I admit that I spend the end of summer wishing it was pumpkin spice season, by the time Halloween rolls around, I’m already over it and ready for all things peppermint — especially peppermint bark.

There’s just something about white chocolate and peppermint together — and bonus points if the white chocolate is layered with milk chocolate— that makes it my favorite seasonal flavor. And judging by the many peppermint-bark-flavored foods you’ll be able to find this season, I’m clearly not alone.

Mean Girls Your Face Smells Like Peppermint GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Not only will we find peppermint bark Oreos in stores near the end of the year, but there are at least two ice cream brands selling peppermint bark ice cream! While Blue Bell’s peppermint bark ice cream can only be found in certain areas of the country, Häagen-Dazs is filling the gap with not one, but two peppermint bark treats that are already available nationwide.

The peppermint bark ice cream consists of white chocolate ice cream blended with chocolate peppermint bark and peppermint candy pieces. For an extra dose of chocolate, you can also get the peppermint bark ice cream in bar form, with white chocolate ice cream dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with peppermint candy pieces.

I can’t help but think this ice cream would be amazing alongside some other peppermint treats, like white chocolate peppermint bark cheesecake or candy cane shortbread.

Or, of course, you could always just dip the peppermint bark bars into the pint of ice cream! Will you be picking up some peppermint bark ice cream before it’s gone again until next season?

This Jacket Has A Built-in Heater To Keep You Super Warm This Winter

Nature, Weather & Space

If you’re the type of person who hates being cold, you’ll likely do everything in your power to stay warm during the winter months. Having a good-quality coat is a must in many parts of the country, but when it’s really freezing out, even the best coat is no match for brutal temperatures.

But what if your coat had a built-in heater inside? Thanks to Midwest-based apparel company Ororo, you can get vests, coats, fleeces and sweatshirts with rechargeable battery heating devices inside.

Wow! As someone who has battled Midwest winters my entire life, this sounds like a dream come true. Their apparel offers heating in different areas of the body with four different heating levels, and the battery lasts for about eight hours. If it’s not quite cold enough for the personal heater, you can still wear it as a regular, non-heated jacket. Their whole collection is available on Amazon, where you’ll find pieces for men and women in multiple styles.

Their most popular item is their Women’s Slim Fit Heated Jacket, which has a solid four-star rating with 304 reviews. The jacket features a soft-shell fabric exterior with fleece lining and a detachable hood. It generates heat on both sides of your chest and across your mid-back. It’s machine-washable and comes with a one-year warranty.

“I tend to be cold when others aren’t, so not only do I use it outside, but it’s become my secret weapon in cold conference rooms, at the movie theater, the grocery store, and other places where it’s too cold for me,” reads one review.

“This jacket isn’t bulky at all yet completely windproof, which I tested downtown Chicago right next to Lake Michigan,” reads another. “I don’t think the battery is too heavy at all. It actually doesn’t bother me one bit. So very happy I purchased this.”

Some of the reviews do point out that the battery can only be charged with the provided charger, so it’s essential to bring it with you if you bring the jacket on a trip, and some felt the battery was a bit heavy as well.

If you’re looking for even more heated products to keep you toasty and warm this winter, check out this heated sleeping bag for your feet, this heated car blanket and these heated slippers.

Apple Pie Bars Might Just Replace Apple Pie At Your Holiday Meals This Year

Food & Recipes

They sound delicious!

There’s nothing quite as classic as good ol’ apple pie, but if that’s what you’ve brought to holiday gatherings every year, you may be in the mood to switch things up. To present that traditional, nostalgic flavor in a brand-new form, we’ve got just the thing: apple pie bars!

This recipe from Tastes of Lizzy T will walk you through how to create a dessert that’s part apple danish, part apple pie — and 100-percent delicious.

A major thing that separates this dessert from a traditional apple pie is the fact that it’s served up in a 9 x 13 pan, and can therefore yield more servings. No double-pie-baking for you this year.

Using little more than flour, butter, eggs and sugar, you’ll make your own crust. Next, layer on the apple slices and spices. Sounds like apple pie so far, right?

Here’s where it gets interesting: There’s a layer of crushed corn flakes in between the apples and the bottom layer of crust to keep the crust from becoming soggy. And if that wasn’t enough to set this dessert apart, you’ll also top it with an almond glaze.

Tastes of Lizzy T

If you like the idea of creating a pie bar instead of a pie this year, this is only the beginning. For instance, this recipe for apple pie bars from Sally’s Baking Addiction calls for a healthy amount of salted caramel and a crunchy streusel crust on top for a take on apple pie that’s delicious — and far from average.

Sally’s Baking Addiction

This version from What Molly Made uses homemade snickerdoodles as the “crust,” giving this dessert even more cinnamon and brown sugar flavor, plus the ooey-gooey texture of a cookie.

What Molly Made

If you’re really looking to mix things up, you could use this recipe from Mom On Timeout, which combines classic apple pie ingredients with cheesecake to yield a tasty treat that’s basically two desserts in one.

These Shelters Are Asking Families To Embrace The Holiday Spirit By Hosting A Shelter Pet For Thanksgiving

What a great idea! Do you know someone who would love to do this?

Room for one more? An animal shelter in Richmond, Virginia, is accepting volunteers to open their homes to one of their shelter animals for Thanksgiving. So, if you were worried about having too many leftovers, get ready to share some of your scraps with these deserving animals.

The Richmond Animal Care and Control started this Thanksgiving fostering system four years ago, The Dodo reports.

“I was feeling so sad about the dogs being alone in the shelter for Thanksgiving,” shelter director Christie Chipps Peters told The Dodo. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if people could invite them over for Thanksgiving dinner?’”

She let the community know that taking a pet home temporarily over Thanksgiving was an option, and pretty soon, 35 of the animals had families inviting them over for dinner.

According to Peters, more than half of the animals were adopted that year, either by the families who had offered to host them or by people who had met them through the family over Thanksgiving.

That’s why four years later, this fostering program is still going strong. This year, the shelter posted to Facebook offering the chance to take an animal home this holiday season:

For all those in the Richmond area who are interesting in hosting a furry friend this Thanksgiving, please also keep in mind that the shelter is looking for families who don’t already have pets. From there, you’ll be interviewed to find out which animal might be the best fit for your family. Then, you’ll walk away with a new best friend for the next few days (or longer if you decide to adopt!). You’ll be asked to foster the animal beginning as early as Nov. 18, and you can wait as late as Nov. 21 to bring the animal home with you.

If you don’t happen to be in the Richmond area, there’s still a chance that your local shelter will let you host a dog or cat for Thanksgiving.

For example, the LifeLine Animal Project in Atlanta is serving up an extra bit of cheer this holiday season by allowing families to foster animals for the entire week leading up to Turkey Day. In their Facebook post about the program, they say the shelter will even provide you with supplies for fostering an animal:

And last year, after a successful Thanksgiving fostering program, the Humane Society of Delaware County in Ohio also offered the option to take a pet home for Christmas and New Year’s, too. In fact, this pup they posted on Instagram looks 100 percent ready to snuggle when you need to nap after the big Thanksgiving meal:

You can always check in with your local shelter to see if fostering over Thanksgiving is an option. Some shelters have an internal program for holiday fostering that allows their regular volunteers to host a pet, but not the general public. Sounds like one more reason to help out at your local animal shelter!

This Heated Mouse Pad Cocoon Will Keep Your Hands Toasty All Winter

Gift Ideas

This is brilliant.

While I am incredibly fortunate to now work from the comfort of my own home, where I can set the temperature where I want it, I used to work in an office that had two temperatures — sweating or teeth-chattering. I had a fan for the summer and a heater for the winter and, sometimes, I could barely type on the keyboard because my hands were so cold.

If your office thermostat is of similar quality, you’ve probably already learned a few tricks, like wearing fingerless gloves and keeping heated blankets in your drawers. But if your productivity still suffers when you’re cold, you may need even more tricks to get through the day.

Cold Jim Carrey GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Luckily, we’re not alone in our unending appetite for clever products that will keep us warm while working. Which is why this genius heated mouse pad warmer — available on Amazon for $18.95 — exists. This nifty product will keep at least one hand warm while you’re working.

Basically a heating pad for your hand, the mouse pad simply plugs into the USB port of your computer and stays warm while connected. If you don’t want to turn the heat on, simply don’t plug it in — it can still be used as a normal mouse pad.

If you’re concerned about the hand that’s not in the mouse pad, or just your overall level of coldness as winter continues to creep up on you, you might want to check out this list of other products that are made for people who are seriously always cold.

The list even includes a few other things you can use in the office, like these USB heated mittens (so both your hands can stay warm!) or this heated mouse you could totally put in your mousepad warmer.

Will you be ordering a heated mouse pad warmer for your office?

How ‘Chopped’ Judge Chris Santos Lost 30 Pounds

Chris looks amazing! He lost the weight by making these few lifestyle changes.

As a restauranteur and a judge on the cooking competition show “Chopped,” Chris Santos’ life revolves around food. And so, over a 10-year period, he watched excess weight creep on until he realized he had gained 50 pounds. The chef decided some changes were in order to shed the extra pounds. With the help of a more plant-based diet and intermittent fasting, Santos has already dropped 30 pounds.

Three days a week, Santos practices controlled eating, which means that he fasts for 16 hours a day. He has also cut down on his alcohol consumption and switched from beer to liquor with water or soda water. He says that overeating and unhealthy food choices at night were a coping mechanism after a long and stressful workday, inevitably leading to his weight gain.

“Before, when I got home after a 12-14 hour day, that was my time—that was me time,” he told People. “I would order food late, and it would never be anything good. It would be a cheesesteak, a pizza, a cheeseburger, any number of things that are definitely not healthy choices whatsoever. If GrubHub had a category called unhealthy, that would be the one I would be clicking on every time.”

In addition to overhauling his diet, Santos also began running and completed his first 5K. His next goal is a 10K, and he’s not ruling out the possibility of a full marathon.

Check out his progress in this before and after shot he posted to Instagram:

“I’m about to run my first 5K so with that in mind let’s call this ‘before and after part 1,’” he captioned the side-by-side photos. “I started this journey to a much healthier me on June 20, and so far I’m down 30 pounds! Look for ‘before and after part 2’ when I’ve lost another 15 to 20! Thanks to everyone who have been supporting me and keeping me on track, especially my inspiration @nataliemakenna!”

Best of luck to Santos on his continued journey to better health!

You’ve Been Eating Burgers Wrong Your Whole Life

Yes, apparently there’s a right way.

Burgers are one of those widely beloved foods. Whether you like yours with cheese or without, vegetarian or full beef, from your favorite pub or the fast food joint down the street, there’s no wrong way to enjoy a good burger. Except that, according to burger experts, there is a wrong way to enjoy your burger and, chances are, you’ve been doing it wrong all along.

That’s right. It turns out you’re supposed to eat your burger upside down, so as to better to keep all the toppings in. Who knew?

“Burgers are served the way they are purely for aesthetics,” Simon Dukes, founder of the blog Burger Lad, told Insider. “The crown (the top of the bun) is generally thicker (and therefore stronger) than the heel, so for a better eating experience, you should actually flip it upside-down to eat it.”

burger photo

Wow! My mind is officially blown. I’ve been enjoying burgers for as long as I can remember, and I never realized there was another way to eat them.

In addition to keeping your burger intact, some advocates of the upside-down eating method also say that eating it this way makes the burger taste better. They say you’ll enjoy a rush of flavors right away because the toppings will hit your tongue first when you flip the whole thing upside down. Talk about food for thought!

Not everyone agrees with this unconventional method, though. Dan Pashman, host of The Sporkful podcast, recommends starting with a good quality-bun, toasting it and putting the cheese under the patty as two ways to mitigate the problem of a messy, leaking burger.

“The burger is the star,” Pashman told The Takeout. “I don’t want the first things my tongue hits to be the thick piece of bread followed by tomato, lettuce, and onions. What are we eating, Subway?!”

He has a point! What do you think? Will you continue eating your burgers right-side-up, or do you think there’s something to the upside-down method?

This Elaborate ‘Titanic’-themed Proposal Is Going Viral

We’d say he nailed it! Congratulations to the happy couple!

Fans of the 1997 blockbuster film “Titanic” consider the ill-fated relationship between Jack and Rose one of the all-time best on-screen romances. One man even went so far as to let the film inspire his surprise proposal to his girlfriend, and it turned out beautifully.

When Jeremy Brown asked the love of his life, Mori Madrid, to marry him, he had her wear a maroon gown similar to the one Kate Winslet, who plays Rose, wore in the movie. He wore a replica of Leonardo DiCaprio’s (Jack’s) tuxedo from the movie. Brown then blindfolded Madrid and brought her to the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

At the bottom of the grand staircase, an exact replica of the ship’s original staircase, Brown got down on one knee and asked Madrid to marry him while “My Heart Will Go On,” the film’s hit theme song by Celine Dion, played in the background.

Watch the whole romantic scene play out in the video below, posted to the museum’s Facebook page:

The video now has more than 1.6 million views. While she’s still wearing a blindfold, Madrid is visibly nervous as Christina Collins, the museum’s event and wedding planner, guides her. She says she has no idea what to expect. When Collins removes the blindfold and hands Madrid a note, she opens it and reads it aloud: “Meet me at the clock. Make it count,” which is a line from the movie.

After she accepts his proposal, they share a kiss as the museum’s staff cheers and claps. In addition to an engagement ring, Brown also gives his new fiance a replica of the Heart of the Ocean necklace Rose wears in the movie.

“Titanic” is one of the Houston couple’s favorite movies, so Brown knew his surprise would resonate with Madrid. He told her they were on their way to a ball, so Madrid did not know he was about to ask her to marry him.

“It was almost like being in the movie yourself,” Madrid told Fox 17 of the elaborate proposal. “It was just amazing. It just made me feel like the movie. It was so beautiful and unique, this was so above!”

Although the museum has hosted proposals before, the one Brown staged is one for the books.

“We do normal proposals, but those are just, as you tour the museum, you get to the grand staircase and as they are walking up, they propose,” Collins told Yahoo Lifestyle. “But Jeremy wanted to make it an event.”

We’d say he nailed it! Congratulations to the happy couple!
